Regional accreditation is the most recognized form of accreditation in the USA.
It is therefore natural that regionally accredited colleges are some of the most preferred by most of the prospective students across the United States of America.

As far as school accreditation and recognition is concerned, there is no difference between on-campus qualification and online qualification.
This is because the same accreditation bodies that accredit brick and mortar colleges are the same ones that accredit colleges that offer offering online programs.

How to Identify Regionally Accredited Online Schools

There are many colleges that claim to have regional accreditation. You should be careful not to fall in to these claims, some of which are made by colleges which are not accredited or whose accreditation is not recognized in the U.S.A

A college is regionally accredited only if it is accredited by one of the 6 accrediting agencies recognized by the Commission of Higher Education accreditation (CHEA) and the US Department of education.
Always confirm a college’s accreditation by independently checking with the accrediting agency or with the Commission of Higher Education accreditation (CHEA) or the US Department of education rather than just relying on information form the University.

The six regional accreditation agencies are;
North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement – The agency accredits schools in Ohio, Indiana, Arizona, Nebraska, Washington, Missouri, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, Colorado, Michigan, and Utah, For more information on this agency, visit their website at http://www.ncacasi.org

Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The agency accredits schools in New York, New Jersey, Virgin Islands, Delaware, Puerto Rico, Maryland, Pennsylvania and District of Columbia. For more information on this agency, visit their website at http://www.msache.org

New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The agency accredits schools in New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and American/international schools in many nations worldwide. For more information on this agency, visit their website at http://www.neasc.org

Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The agency accredits schools in Guam, Hawaii and California. For more information on this agency, visit their website at http://www.wascweb.org

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The agency accredits schools in Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina South Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky. For more information on this agency, visit their website at http://www.sacscoc.org

Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The agency accredits schools in Montana, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Nevada Alaska and Idaho. For more information on this agency, visit their website at http://www.nwccu.org/

You can check a University’s accreditation status by visiting the US Department of Education search and search for the status of any college. If it is not accredited by any of the institutions above, It is not regionally accredited.

You can also check by visiting Council for Higher education accreditation search (CHEA), which provides a database of recognized accrediting agencies and accredited institutions and programs. Confirm that it is accredited by either of the above agencies for regional accreditation.

Benefits of earning a degree from a Regionally Accredited School

You should always ensure that you have only enrolled in an accredited college recognized by Commission of Higher Education accreditation (CHEA) or the US Department of education. The two institutions recognize regional and National accreditation.

These two forms of accreditation have two main benefits in addition to being the only assurance that you have earned a legitimate degree form a real college.
Regional and national accreditation is the basic requirement for a college to participate in any state and federal student financial aid program. You will not get any form of financial aid if the college does not have any of the two accreditation.

These two are the only forms of accreditation that are widely accepted by employers and other genuine colleges.
Though the Commission of Higher Education accreditation (CHEA) or the US Department of education considers both forms of accreditation to be equal, in practice, qualifications earned from regionally accredited online colleges and on-campus Universities appear to have two main advantages over Nationally accredited Universities.

• Though each University reserves the right to decide on college credit transfer, credits earned from a regionally accredited college are almost freely transferable to regionally accredited colleges and to nationally accredited colleges which is not usually the case for credits earned from a nationally accredited college. It also becomes hard for students with a qualification in a nationally accredited university to pursue a higher level degree in a regionally accredited institution.
If you are planning to transfer credits, please note that each University reserves the right to accept and reject credits from other institutions. You should always confirm with the institution you wish to transfer credits to confirm if your qualifications from one college will be accepted in another college.

• Though most employers will readily accept qualification from both regionally and nationally accepted schools, a few employers may be biased towards qualifications from regionally accredited schools.

What about Program Accreditation

A University may have an institutional accreditation but not have any program accreditation or may have accreditation for some of its programs. A University does not have to have it’s programs accredited but it is a plus if it’s programs are accredited. There different forms of program accreditation but the following are some of the most prominent.

  • Business - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
  • Teaching – The national Council for accreditation of teacher education (NCATE)
  • Nursing – Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Engineering – Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)
  • Doctors – The liason Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
  • Police – Federal Enforcement training accreditation (FLETA)
